Update on my SHTF truck part II

Remember awhile back, I posted pics of my 4x4 Jimmy ? Well, the front axle is 'wasted' - gears hangin' out - the whole shebang is snafu.

Loadin' up that massive 14-Bolt rear axle onto my truck (that thing is not only heavy, it's rated to support 7,000 lbs.)

Nope, it's a GM 14-bolt full floating rear axle (10 1/2" ring gear) :

TAD,

DANG MAN, WHY DIDN'T YOU CONTACT ME?

I'm considering replacing my DANA 44/10 bolt axles (3.08 gearing) with the Dana 60/14 bolt axles (4.56 gearing) that came in the M1008's. A buddy of mine has a take off set. He replaced them with dually set up.

I'd have all but given them to you. I can't pull the old ones off WITHOUT having someplace to get rid of them. I'm starting to resemble a milsurp lot. The wife IS NOT pleased.

GOOD JOB. You WILL LIKE the Dana 44/14 bolt set up. What gearing is in it?

Heimdal, nah he'll just stick the MG43 out the passenger side door window...

As for the missiles and the rest, I'm workin' on it. :adore:

You did good on the 14 bolt rear, but the dana 44 is no better than the corp 10 bolt that grenaded on you earlier. You need a Dana 60 front out of a 1 ton to upgrade. Or, beef up the 44 with new axles, gearset, bearings and locker. The axles are usually the weak point.

I just cannot fathom the worship of the Chevy Blazer on this forum...

They are rust-prone, made-for-civilian, thin sheet-metaled vehicles....Nothing more...They are borderline junk IMO....

I very recently took my 10 wheel drive deuce down into a Tennessee canyon and across a creek. I went up the other side through sparse woods and crossed a natural dam and exited about 30 acres away through a long deep-woods trail.

I have owned similar Blazers as these and currently own a nice late 90's Dodge 4wd with 10.00 tires...They would come nowhere CLOSE to what this deuce will do.

I was running a mixture of diesel, burnt oil and veggie oil...The truck is "multifuel" and will burn anything flammable..

It barely spun a tire the entire way...A Blazer or my Dodge would have been fighting for it's life.

I just upgraded it with "air-assist" steering and what a difference it's made.

Re: Update on my SHTF truck part II

This is my own criteria for a competant off roader only. This doesn't compare handling, ride, price, coolness factor, carrying capacity, etc. Only what I deem important for off road performance.

Off road advantage comparo between stock Blazer, Modified Blazer (4-6 inch lift, 32"-35" mud terrain tire, 14 bolt rear/Dana 60 front/ NP 205TC, lockers, 4:56 gears, mild modified motor, and Deuce:

Short Wheelbase (manouverability, avoid dragging undercarriage) - 1st Blazer/Mod Blazer (tie), 3rd Duece
Power to weight (power to the ground)- 1st Mod Blazer, 2nd Blazer, 3rd Duece
Small size (fit in tight spaces) - 1st Blazer/Mod Blazer, 3rd Duece
HD Components (how tough is it?) - 1st Duece, 2nd Mod Blazer, 3rd Blazer
Fording ability (going through deep water) - 1st Duece, 2nd Mod Blazer, 3rd Blazer
Ground Clearance (crawling over rocks, etc.) - 1st Duece, 2nd Mod Blazer, 3rd Blazer
Low Weight (when you do get stuck) - 1st Blazer, 2nd Mod Blazer, 3rd Duece

Lowest Score Wins: Mod Blazer 11, Blazer 14, Duece 15

My semi-scientific, un-weighted results place the Duece LAST for off road performance.

Cheers
